2 key items when making this recipe
Spicy beef in tomato sauce has a lovely flavour but the key is to focus on 2 items:
- The quality of the beef is important – try to use either steak mince or low fat mince
- Try to use fresh thyme and coriander (cilantro). If you can’t grow it at home then shop bought fresh alternatives are easy to use.
How to grow coriander at home
When you are cooking fresh herbs tend to make a real difference to the results. Herbs are really easy to grow at home and many of them grow really fast.
But if you grow coriander you will need to decide how you want to use it. Because all parts are edible but your growing technique will be different.
The 3 Top Coriander Varieties
- Root Coriander – Ideal for recipes like Thai soups, curries, etc.
- Seed coriander – Ideal for recipes like Indian curries, German Sausages, etc.
- Leaf Coriander – Ideal for recipes like Chinese stir-fry, Mexican Salsa, etc

Mauritius Cuisine
Researching foods in Mauritius has made the country on my next holiday list !!!
Mauritius is probably the ultimate place for food fusion.
The choice of recipes are either based on African, Chinese, European (French & Dutch) or Indian foods. You can either use the original recipes or more interesting they are blended into unique Mauritian meals (source mainly from Wikipedia)
For example you could have a:
- Chinese style starter – such as crispy chicken or crispy squid
- French style main course – like Coq au vin or Daube (chicken or beef stew)
- Indian style dessert – like Rasgulla (a syrupy dessert)
But the main meal that really appealed is the Creole style Rougaille, which is this recipe. The recipe on this page uses beef but you can also use chicken, sausages or fish.
