How to grow herbs from seeds fast
Saturday May 15th
Tip 1 – Soak seeds in water and sow in soil
The first item to focus on is to soak your seeds in water before sowing them.
As the video shows this is not what I did with my initial ‘trial’ and the herbs simply didn’t grow. The first herbs I focussed on where the ones I use most often:
- Sweet or Genovese Basil : ideal for Italian, French or Greek recipes
- Peppermint : With a stronger flavour it’s ideal for lamb recipes, new potatoes and sauces
- Leaf Coriander (Cilantro) : ideal for recipes like Chinese stir-fry, Mexican Salsa, etc
All you do is to simply add the seeds to a bowl of water and then sprinkle them on top of soil. The cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.

Tip 2 – Grow seeds using a heat mat
In a pot or on a heat mat?
Yes, soaking seeds in water will help them get started quickly. But in addition if you put the seed tray in a heat mat this is supposed to get even better results.
Did it work ?
The video below shows the difference a heat mat makes in just 1 week
Natural light or a grow lamp ?
At present it is May with lovely long days. But will a grow lamp make a difference ?
I will update this page in a few weeks to find out..
